The Help

I just finished The Help and I really couldn’t put it down. It was probably the exact opposite after reading The Hunger Games. THG is action packed, fast-paced, and fantasy/sci-fi. The Help is told in narrative fashion with three narrators, Abaileen, Minny, and Miss Skeeter. Abaileen and Minny are both maids for a few white women in Jackson, MS. Miss Skeeter is a young, white woman who just graduated college and is one of those thinks-ahead-of-her-time kind of woman. She’s independent and funny. I like how it was told because of the different perspectives but told in a continuous way. You don’t read the same story from different point of views, and you really get to know the narrators and their three lives. It’s a really funny book, and most of the humor comes from the narration, I think especially how things are described or compared to, but not particularly the situations. Though, some scenes are hilarious and surprising! What I liked about the book to was that I grew up in MS and now live in Chicago, and both were described in the book! I can’t wait for the movie to come out, only a few more days! I really became a Skeeter and Stuart shipper during the book, and would impatiently flip to Miss Skeeter’s sections just to see if Stuart would show up again. I was sad they broke up in the end, but I guess it’s because the book is really about The Help, and not a love story. I was confused at the end, did Miss Skeeter turn into a hippie? haha. I wonder.
